The Lone Sailor© - Lake Champlain Navy Memorial, Burlington, Vermont

A Lone Sailor statue was dedicated on June 18, 2005 in Burlington, Vt., on the Lake Champlain Basin. The statue is located on the picturesque site of The Leahy Center for Lake Champlain, adjacent to ECHO, a lake aquarium and science center in Burlington. The Leahy Center was named for Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy. This Memorial rests on the former site of the U.S. Naval Reserve Center.

The Memorial commemorates Lake Champlain's significant naval history and honors all men and women who are serving and have served in the sea services. Lake Champlain is also the site of two critical historic battles. Under the command of Commodore Benedict Arnold, the 1776 Battle of Valcour Island had a profound impact on the outcome of the Revolutionary War. During the War of 1812, the U.S. again defended Lake Champlain against invasion from Great Britain in the Battle of Plattsburg Bay. Burlington, Vermont is the seventh city outside the nation's capital to have The Lone Sailor© statue, which was created by sculptor Stanley Bleifeld. Bleifeld's original statue is located on the U.S. Navy Memorial. The Lake Champlain Navy Memorial will also include commemorative plaques by the Vermont granite company, Rock of Ages, crafters of Washington, D.C.'s World War II Memorial.
